Put the Reader link back in Gmail with a Chrome extension

Google made a minor tweak to the Gmail navigation links recently -- moving Photos into a more prominent spot and Reader into the More drop-down. While I wasn't particularly concerned (I've got Firefox hotkeys wired to most of my bookmarks for fast mouse-free access), the change created quite a stir on Twitter.

But as is usually the case, enthusiasts who don't want to accept changes on their favorite Web sites have already responded. If you want your Reader link back and you're using Google Chrome, grab the Put Reader Back extension. Once installed, just reload your Gmail tab to see the change.

Entire uncensored Playboy library, old and new, coming to iPad

Porn lord Hugh Hefner has just announced, via Twitter, that the recently-digitized entire Playboy catalog will be coming to the iPad. Interestingly, though, he also says that new Playboy content will be coming to the iPad, which suggests it will utilize iOS's upcoming subscription support.

If all that wasn't cool enough, and further confusing Apple's stance on adult content, Hugh also confirmed that his entire opus of porn will be uncensored. Historically, Apple has been incredibly tight when it comes to nudity and sexuality -- but, rather incongruously, the Playboy and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit apps have always remained unscathed. Neither of those apps have full frontal nudity, though, so an uncensored Playboy for iPad app could be a sign that Apple's puritanical policing is being relaxed.

Sony Reader app for Android now available

Sony had promised an Android companion app for its eBook store in January 2011, and it's delivered. You can now find Sony Reader in the Android Market, ready to pocket-size your digital tomes previously purchased from the Reader Store.

Like other eBook apps, Sony Reader allows you to adjust the font size and brightness, and supports bookmarking and highlighting. Tap the bottom of the reading window and a slider appears which you can move to skip ahead or back. You can also jump between bookmarks and highlighted passages, and Reader offers a decent built-in search function as well. As an added bonus for owners of a Sony Reader Daily Edition, you can keep your Android device and e-ink reading on the same page, as it were.

An iOS version is also in the works, though Sony's mobile app page says only that it's "coming soon." Sony Reader for Android is a free download and is available now from the Android Market.

Unity 2D now available for both Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick and 11.04 Natty

Unity 2D
After only hinting at its existence this morning, it is now possible to install Unity 2D on both the latest stable version of Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), and the upcoming 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

Unity 2D takes the form of a normal Personal Package Archive (PPA) that goes by the name 'Unity-Qt'. You can get it by simply adding the the Unity 2D repository, updating apt-get, and then installing it. WebUpd8 reports that the PPA is broken at the moment, resulting in some additional steps to get it working -- but just follow their guide, and you'll be running Unity 2D in no time!

Initial reactions suggest that Unity 2D is pretty darn slick, and a viable alternative if you can't run, or don't want to run, the 3D version. There's a video of it in action after the break.

Court grants Sony's temporary restraining order against Geohot, PS3 jailbreak still available everywhere

It looked for a moment like Geohot and fail0verflow might beat Sony's DMCA lawsuit over the PS3 jailbreak on a jurisdictional technicality, but things didn't go their way: the US District Court for the Northern District of California granted Sony's request for a temporary restraining order forbidding Mr. Hotz and his merry men from distributing or linking to the jailbreak, helping or encouraging others to jailbreak, hacking into the PS3 or PSN, or distributing any information they've found while hacking. What's more, they've been ordered to turn over any computers or storage media used to create the jailbreak to Sony's lawyers -- although we've got a feeling Geohot's attorneys will raise a bit of a fuss about that.

Of course, this doesn't mean that Sony's won anything substantive -- it's just proven to the court that the jailbreak will cause it ongoing harm while the case continues, and it still has to actually win its formal lawsuit to collect any damages or a permanent injunction. And let's not forget that forcing Geohot to stop distributing it won't stop anyone else -- in almost an exact mirror of the deCSS case, we're already seeing the jailbreak mirrored all over the internet. Way to learn from history, Sony.

[Thanks, Henry]

Dwolla, the low-fee PayPal alternative, now for Windows Phone 7

A little while back, we told you about Dwolla -- a new payment service with its sights set on challenging PayPal. Dwolla's angle? A flat rate per transaction of $0.25 and no other fees of any kind. It's also integrated with Twitter and Facebook, which makes it easy to send money to (or receive from) the people you're interacting with most online.

Now, Dwolla is expanding its mobile offerings with a new Windows Phone 7 app -- which joins its Android and iOS offerings. Like the Dwolla apps for other mobile platforms, the app provides a simple, straightforward interface which allows you to send payments, check your balance, and view your contacts. Sending a payment is a breeze -- just choose a contact, enter the amount, your pin, and a comment (if any) and you're done. You can also opt to pay the 25-cent fee yourself, or let the recipient absorb it.

Dwolla is a free download and is available now in the Zune Marketplace. The service is currently U.S.-only.

Quora + CrunchBase + LinkedIn = Best Extension Ever?

A month ago, Polaris Ventures principal Ryan Spoon wrote up a quick blog post looking for a developer with Chrome extension/app experience. He had a pretty simple idea for something to help him with his job. Matt Basta saw the post and created the extension Spoon was looking for almost instantly. Now they're opening it up for all to use and calling it Polaris Insights. The straightforward app is very, very slick. You simply visit the website of a company you're interested in, hit the extension button, and you get an overlay of the CrunchBase, LinkedIn, and Quora data for the company. The CrunchBase column shows you the funding information, the LinkedIn column shows you your connections within the company, and the Quora column shows you some of the Q&A conversations going on about about company.
